The S32Z and S32E real-time processors feature Arm® Cortex®-R52 split-lock processors for multitenant software integration plus lockstep Arm Cortex-M33 processors for system management, combining multi-core, real-time processing with core-to-pin hardware virtualization, DSP/ML processing, communications acceleration and Gigabit Ethernet switch with hardware security and ISO 26262 ASIL D safety.
The S32Z processors are ideal for safety processing and domain and zonal control, while the S32E processors are ideal for electric vehicle (xEV) control and smart actuation. The software-compatible S32Z and S32E processors help enable software-defined vehicles, reduce software integration complexity and enhance security and safety.
The S32Z and S32E processors are part of the NXP S32 Platform and are supported by a comprehensive third-party ecosystem and feature a minimum of 15 years of product longevity.

A real-time processor goes beyond traditional automotive microcontrollers to address real-time needs, maintaining the critical properly of safe, deterministic operation like an automotive microcontroller, but providing the unparalleled combination of gigahertz speed, multi-application isolation and memory expansion capabilities that are more characteristic of microprocessors. The S32Z and S32E are the first families in the new class of processors called “real-time processors”.
S32Z processors target safety processing and domain and zonal controllers. S32E processors target electric vehicle (xEV) control and smart actuation.
The S32Z and S32E families share many of the same capabilities with eight Arm® Cortex®-R52 processor cores with split-lock support, dual-core lockstep Cortex-M33 processor cores and a DSP/ML processor, along with communications acceleration, TSN Gigabit Ethernet switch and hardware security engine. They both support ISO/SAE 21434 cybersecurity and ISO 26262 ASIL D functional safety. However, the S32E family of processors offers additional capabilities (5V analog and I/Os with complex timers) to support actuation applications. The S32Z processors are ideal for safety processing and domain and zonal control, while the S32E processors are ideal for electric vehicle (xEV) control and smart actuation.
The S32Z and S32E processors are implemented in TSMC 16 nm FinFET technology.
The S32Z and S32E families provide real-time processing capabilities to complement the current S32K general-purpose microcontrollers and the S32G vehicle network processors. Together, all of the NXP S32 families offer customers a range of automotive processing solutions to meet the needs of vehicle architectures from the vehicle computer to the domain and zonal controllers, while also addressing safety processing.
The S32Z and S32E processors are supported by the S32 Design Studio, along with enablement software such as drivers, hypervisors, OSes and inter-processor communications. A vehicle integration platform called GreenVIP provides a software framework for accelerating real-time software integration, and the S32 safety software framework helps customers leverage the ASIL D safety features of the devices. There is also the GreenBox 3 hardware platform that hosts GreenVIP and applications software for silicon evaluation, software development and rapid prototyping.
Development Platform
