The introduction of CAN FD enabled CAN networks to operate at higher data rates, supporting new and innovative features in automotive and industrial applications. However, as signal ringing becomes more apparent at higher speeds CAN FD struggled to keep the benefit of large and complex topologies as originally offered by CAN. In effect, CAN FD is limited in speed and constrained to simple, highly linear networks, reducing network flexibility and increases cabling cost and weight. With the introduction of CAN signal improvement capability (SIC) technology, NXP has untangled the trade-off between data rate and topology. CAN SIC actively improves the CAN signal, enabling higher data rates and greatly increasing freedom in network design.
