The Controller Area Network (CAN bus) is a message-based communication network standard that allows ECUs to communicate within a vehicle without the use of dedicated analog signal wires.
By utilizing multiplex wiring, CAN significantly reduces cost, complexity and weight of a design and allows new features to be implemented in firmware, allowing for over-the-air firmware updates and saving further on engineering design time.
