The FRDM-K28F is a low cost development board for Kinetis K27 and K28 high-performance microcontrollers based on Arm® Cortex®-M4
- Enable rapid prototyping, including a 6-axis digital accelerometer and magnetometer to create full eCompass
capabilities, dual role high-speed and full-speed USB interface with Micro-B USB connector, a microSD card slot
a tri-colored LED and two user push-buttons for direct interaction, 1x256Mb QuadSPI external flash, Mobile
SDRAM, FlexIO-based LCD socket, and light sensor
*Note: FXOS8700CQ accelerometer is in “End of Life” status
- Form-factor compatible with the Arduino® Rev3 pin layout
- Feature Core Voltage Bypass (Available on K28 only)
- Include NXP open source hardware embedded serial and debug adapter (OpenSDAv2.2) running an open source bootloader, which offers options for serial communication, flash programming, and run-control debugging
The FRDM-K28F is enabled using NXP MCUXpresso Config Tools, MCUXpresso SDK, Power Estimation Tool, and MCUXpresso IDE and a large software partner ecosystem (please check Download tab).

- Kinetis K20 MCU (K20DX128VFM5) based OpenSDA circuit.
Memory
- One 256 Mbit (32 MB) onboard QuadSPI memory at 1.8 V.
- One 128 Mbit (16 MB) onboard mobile SDRAM memory at 3.3 V.
Connectivity
- Dual-role high-speed and full-speed USB interface with the micro-B USB connector via the high-speed switch.
- FlexIO socket, which enables you to connect an optional TFT Proto 5” CAPACITIVE from MikroElektronika (5” display board with capacitive touch).
- Easy access to the MCU input/output through Arduino® Rev3 compatible I/O connectors to connect external add-on boards.
Power Management
- Multiple independent voltage domains: VDD_CORE, VDD, VBAT, and VDDIO_E.
- Flexible power supply option—OpenSDA v2.2 USB, Kinetis K28 USB, or an external source.
Debug
- Mass-Storage Device (MSD) flash programming interface. CMSIS-DAP debug interface over a driverless USB HID connection providing run-control debugging and compatibility with the IDE tools. Virtual serial port interface Open source CMSIS-DAP software project
- RGB LED
- Two mechanical push-buttons for user input and one for the reset.
