The MPC8568E Modular Development System is designed for hardware and software developers using the MPC8568E PowerQUICC® III family to accelerate development and testing, and improve time to market. The MPC8568E MDS enables:

  • Silicon bring-up/verification
  • Software/application development and support
  • Performance benchmarking
  • Customer evaluation

The MPC8568E MDS consists of multiple boards that provide a comprehensive development system—an MPC8568 processor board, a platform I/O board and several expansion modules, adding support for a TDM, ATM or PCI agent.

MPC8568E Processor Board

The MPC8568E Processor Board includes an MPC8568E processor running up to 1.33 GHz, along with circuitry to utilize the following:

  • 4x Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and dual asynchronous receiver/transmitter (DUART)
  • PCI Express®
  • Peripheral component interconnect (PCI)
  • Serial RapidIO®
  • Double data rate (DDR) memory
  • Serial electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM)
  • Control switches and light emitting diode (LED) indicators

Platform I/O Board (PIB)

The Platform I/O Board is an enablement platform allowing the user to add additional PHY or other modules for evaluation with the processor board (PB):

  • Supports up to four PCI-based PMC form factor slots
  • PMC off-the-shelf modules can be connected to the PB via the PIB
  • The PIB is an AdvancedTCA® form factor for users who want to install it into an AdvancedTCA chassis
  • Serial RapidIO®
  • The PIB includes support for:
    • 2x optical Gigabit Ethernet
    • 8x MII 10/100 Base-T Fast Ethernet
  • Supports the MPC83xx PB and all PMC modules provided by NXP®

PMC Expansion Modules

  • PQ-MDS-PCIEXP - Expansion module supporting multiple PCI Agents
  • PQ-MDS-PMCPCIE - Single-slot PMC to PCI agent connector to enable additional PCI-based boards for evaluation
  • PQ-MDS-QOC3 - Supports up to 4x 155 Mbps optical transceivers for evaluating the Utopia L2 /POS bus
  • PQ-MDS-T1 - Supports E1/T1, DS3, T3 I/F with an option of two POTS analog telephone lines

  • Dual 10/100/1000 Mbit/s Ethernet ports for QUICC Engine® (UCC1 and UCC2)
  • Dual 10/100/1000 Mbit/s Ethernet ports for dual eTSEC
  • 4x SerDes connected to Serial RapidIO connector
  • 4x SerDes connected to PCI Express connectors through PCI Express MUX to support host or agent modes:
  • 4x PCI Express edge connector for agent mode can be plugged in a PC
  • 4x PCI Express slot connector for host mode accepts standard (off-the-shelf) PCI Express cards

Local Bus I/F:

  • 32-bit 64 MB SDRAM memory and 133 MHz soldered on board with parity support
  • 16-bit 32 MB NOR flash in a socket
  • Address latch, data, and control buffers to support slow devices on the PIB (and PMC boards)
  • FPGA BCSR

Debug

  • Debug port access via COP connector

Two I2C buses

  • Bus for 256 kb EEPROM, real-time clock (RTC), SODIMM SPD EEPROM, BCSR, and PIB

Three operation modes:

  • Stand-alone mode
  • PIB combined mode—plugged on the PIB
  • PCI mode—plugged into a PC as standard PC card (cost effective) through PCI or PCI Express

Support

  • Supports the MPC8568E, running up to 1.33 GHz at 1.1V core voltage in a 1023-pin TBGA 1 mm pitch package
  • PCI support—32-bit and 66 MHz

Components

  • Dual RS-232 transceiver connected to DUART

QUICC Engine functions supported

  • All QUICC Engine signals are available on PMC0 and PMC1 on the PIB
  • 8x TDM port with the PQ-MDS-T1 card on the PIB (on PMC0)
  • 2x DS3 port with the PQ-MDS-T1 card on the PIB (on PMC0)
  • 2x UTOPIA/POS Level 2, 8/16-bits, multi-
  • PHY multidevice with PQ-MDS-QOC3 cards on the PIB (on PMC0 and PMC1)
  • 6x 10/100 Mbit/s RMII Ethernet ports on the PIB
  • RoHS compliant
  • FCC compliant
  • CE compliant

Platform I/O Board Features

  • AdvancedTCA form factor:
    • Operates in an AdvancedTCA chassis or standalone
    • High-speed riser connectors to enable connections to the system board
    • Four sets of PMC connectors for PCI and QUICC Engine functions
  • QUICC Engine signals are split between two sets of PMC connectors
  • Two sets of PMC connectors can run simultaneous signals to two ATM modules
  • each one of the ATM modules has ADTEC connectors
  • One PCI bus—PCI operates as 32-bit PCI (on two PMC slots)
  • One RS422 port
  • Quad 10/100 Ethernet PHYs with RMII interface (eight available, only four used for MPC8568E)
  • Two 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports with fiber optics connectors
  • I2C for BCSR read and write
  • Logic analyzer connectors for all CE signals
  • Dual 48V input power supply
  • AdvancedTCA input connector (ZONE-1)
  • Backplane connectors (ZD Zone-2) for high-speed signals
