NXP and TU/e Strengthen Machine Learning Expertise with RAISE Collaboration.
NXP® Semiconductors and the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) have joined forces to offer mutually beneficial research, learning and professional development opportunities for advanced students pursuing a course of study in Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence. The project offers funded positions for 2 post-doctoral, 5 PhD, and 2 Professional Doctorate in engineering students. Those accepted into the program will benefit through research grants, a work-study experience and first-hand exposure to the developing world of machine learning and its many useful applications.
The future of the smart connected world depends on expertise in Machine Learning that can enable the devices of tomorrow to anticipate our needs and automate to fulfill them. Eindhoven-based NXP sees Machine learning as a key competence for the future and has outlined key technology growth areas that can help guide students on a practical path to success. NXP believes there is a growth potential in automotive radar, where it is the technology and market leader.
TU/e is a growing leader in the ML/AI realm with ambitious plans to help build the experts of tomorrow. By 2024, 25% of TU/e graduates will be AI specialists, or AI ‘enabled’ engineers. As part of this ambition, the university has established the Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute (EAISI), which is aimed at accelerating expertise and building close collaborations with industry in the field of ML/AI.
Together, NXP and TU/e plan to offer work and research experience in ML/AI for automotive radar, radio and audio communication, and IC design methodologies. The research will give new insights in how to balance the use of real-time data and models, in order to come to safe AI solutions for radar signal processing for automotive applications. Applications in other domains will be explored as well. The joint actions give the partners a jumpstart towards international needs for such key enabling technologies.
“Deep research and professional collaboration are the keys to building impactful AI and Machine Learning expertise. Project RAISE synergistically combines our broad machine learning expertise with NXP’s comprehensive radar, communication and IC-design expertise. We are very pleased with this collaboration, which will expand the reach of our Eindhoven AI Systems Institute and will enable us to combine academic excellence with a strong real-world impact.”
Jan Bergmans, Professor of Electrical Engineering at TU/e
“Automotive radar is possibly the most important technology in the Advanced Driving Assistance suite. As a leader in automotive radar sensing and processing and as a pioneer in Imaging Radar, we are pleased to join forces with TU/e through project RAISE to extend Machine Learning expertise.”
Alessio Filippi, Technical Director of Automotive Radar at NXP
