DSC is short for Digital Signal Controller. DSCs are specialized microprocessors with an architecture that contains a core engine capable of performing both microcontroller and digital signal processor functionalities.
DSC core has the calculation advantage of DSP and flexible addressing modes like an MCU. The cooperation among the peripherals can be very flexible due to the presence of XBAR and EVTG and the sophisticated peripherals themselves (such as eFlexPWM, ADC, DAC, QTimer, etc.). Both the core and the peripherals make it quite suitable for applications like power conversion and motor control. Take MC56F83xxx for example, it’s capable of realizing a HW current loop in full bridge phase shift peak current control.
Compared to a microcontroller (MCU), DSC has a CPU core that incorporates some popular instructions instructions of a DSP core, which significantly increases code efficiency when it comes to digital implementations of FIR/IIR filters and controllers.
Compared to a Digital Signal Processor (DSP), DSC has flexible addressing modes from MCU, such as atomic bit operation and direct addressing mode with embedded peripherals and on-chip flash memory.
For real-time controls, which require intensive signal processing computation such as motor control, power conversion, signal processing, wireless power and electric vehicles.
CodeWarrior 11.1 and 11.2 are the IDEs for our DSCs. We suggest using MCUXpresso Config Tools and MCUXpresso SDK to generate a CodeWarrior-based project and then import the project into CodeWarrior workspace for further development. MCUXpresso SDK provides project templates and driver codes. MCUXpresso Config Tools provides a GUI configuration interface for clocks, pins and peripherals.
